I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at the Holy Family Residence in St. Paul, MN. I have learned a lot about serving others and about myself by working with the Little Sisters of the Poor. I am very appreciative of the opportunity they have given me to serve those in need and to grow in my spirituality.
Interacting with the Residents here at Holy Family Residence has been a great blessing for me. From helping with meals to assisting with activities to making one on one visits., I have learned a lot about working with the elderly. This experience has helped me to become a better, more patient listener. I have learned just how important compassion and company are to the elderly. In simply listening and responding sensitively we are able to recognize their dignity as individuals. By showing that we care for who they are as people not just bodies we give them the respect they deserve.
This in turn gives them peace and joy in their final years. There are so many things that I will miss when I leave. I will miss helping with breakfast on the 3rd floor, I will miss playing bingo, black jack and poker. I will miss reading to the Residents and walking through the halls with the Residents who like to wander. I will miss arranging flowers with Sisters Emmanuel and putting out the candles in the chapel.
Living with the Little Sisters has also been a special spiritual experience for me. In participating in prayer with the sisters my relationship with the Lord has grown in strength and simplicity. I have come to know God and myself better through mass, prayer and service.
I am very grateful to the Sisters, Staff and Residents for their generosity and welcoming spirit! Thank you for having me!
